Programs

Environmental conservation

Biodiversity loss, through land degradation and drought, is a serious threat to the sustainable development activities across the continent of Africa. This is often exacerbated by the lack of knowledge and skills on sustainable land management practices and forest biodiversity conservation. Low levels of awareness and sensitization of the advantages of land restoration among some, combined with poor regulation of resources, and lack of consideration for the interests of local communities, often leads to poor public support and participation towards conservation of natural resources.

Agriculture and Climate change.

planting basins, green manuring, conservation agriculture (rotations, intercropping, mulching and reduced tillage) and agroforestry are among the most common climate- smart practices being promoted in Bunyangabu district  to improve productivity, food availability and resilience to climate hazards.

Gender and climate change:

Differences in the roles and responsibilities of men and women in farm households are likely to influence their capacity to adapt to climate change as well as the choice of adaptation strategies. It is easy to see why: women are poorer because they earn less, have less-secure jobs, and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens the most, according to a report by Care, an international charity. Similarly, the World Bank notes that micro, small and medium enterprises, in which many women work, are less able to bear the costs of climate change than larger firms.Despite being face-to-face with the problem, women are often not part of the solution. The UN’s Gender Action Plan notes that sustainable development can only be achieved if women are involved in developing and implementing all aspects of climate change mitigation and adaptation. This requires making women’s economic empowerment a central pillar in climate policy and action.

Sustainable agriculture and agroforestry

Smallholder farmers in Uganda are hit hardest by the effects of climate change. One of Dream International Agroforestry most important tasks is to provide trainings and advice on how smallholder farmers can adapt to climate change. By employing Sustainable Agriculture and Land Management methods, the farmers can continue to develop their farming methods, despite drought and flooding, and ensure the families access to food. Sustainable agriculture based on agroforestry, growing trees among crops, is multi-functional and diversified and based on agroecological methods adapted to the specific ecosystem.

Our approach.

Those who are most affected by climate change today–women, girls and marginalised communities–must be involved in the design and implementation of climate response actions to ensure the equal sharing of benefits.

Adjusting The Lens On Fruit Trees

The potential of fruit trees to optimize the combined benefits of livelihoods, food security, nutrition and climate mitigation and adaptation is promising but not yet fully understood nor applied in practice.

Therefore, Dream International seeks to increase tree-growing, especially fruit trees, in targeted agricultural landscapes of Rwenzori. It is anticipated that fruit trees will provide nutritional diversity, increased food supply and saleable surplus production to people in need, thereby, contributing towards increased household incomes.
